To analyze the embalming techniques used on a 6,000-year-old intact mummy and gain insights into ancient Egyptian funeral rituals.

Approach:

• Research Techniques: The British–Italian research team employed gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), thermal desorption/pyrolysis (TD/Py)-GC-MS, radiocarbon dating, and shotgun metagenomics.

• The analysis revealed a composition of plant oil, a balsam-type root extract, and a plant-based gum used in embalming.
• The addition of conifer tree resin was crucial for protecting the body from decomposition.
• The findings indicate a sophisticated level of embalming techniques among ancient Egyptians.

Interpretation:

The study provides scientific evidence for the use of embalming in ancient Egypt, dating back to the early Naqada phase, which is earlier than the classic Pharaonic period.
